Your problem finding a teacher

If you don't live in one of the 15 countries that boast their own Alexander society, the most comprehensive lists of teachers can be found on the search page of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique.

This scattered information, however, is incomplete and often out of date. It also doesn't include the growing number of teachers in these countries who are members of one of the other societies.

I hope all the societies will eventually maintain a comprehensive, centralised list. Unfortunately this does not seem likely to happen any time soon. In the meantime, you would need to search all 15 lists to be sure you haven't missed anyone near you.

To make it even more complicated, there is also the smaller Alexander Technique International. The list of ATI teachers is available on the ATI web-site. (Many members of the ATI also belong to STAT or one of its affiliates).

My solution

I am compiling these pages to fill the gap. Although there are still only four countries represented here, teachers who are listed have reported it very helpful in bringing them work.

So, teachers, get yourselves listed now. It's quick and easy. Just send me an email with the necessary details. Here's how it works:–

  1. You need to be a full teaching member of one of the Alexander societies. Your listing will mention which society.
  2. The country you will be teaching in must not be one of the 15 already represented. (I don't wish to duplicate their lists or tread on any toes).
  3. If you want to be in, you do need to tell me. I just don't have time to go hunting for this information.
  4. I am including occasional and even once-only teaching visits — as long as you'll be there a month. You only need to keep me informed and up-to-date on when you will be there.

Background information to help you choose your teacher

  • Lessons is about what happens during a lesson.
  • Courses and fees is about organising a course of lessons. This is important information and advice about the frequency and number of lessons in a typical course, fee structure and the length of a lesson.

No local teacher? Then read this.

Group classes. If you get the opportunity to join one, please read this cautionary note first. Go into it with your eyes wide open: otherwise you could end up seriously short-changed — and not even realise it.

Project Struck Gold
In 2005, my project helping pupils find a teacher struck gold, in India. Many thanks to Dr Deepak Sharan.
  • Do you live in a country with no Alexander teacher? Do you want one?
  • Are you an Alexander teacher who would like to start a practice in such a country?
Either way, I can help: just e-mail me.
